Abstract

Sweden has a goal to have fossil free aviation in 2045 and aim to already in 2030 have fossil free domestic flights. A step on the way to become fossil free is to introduce electric aviation at Swedish airports. Electric aviation are aircrafts powered by electricity and is a way to reduce aviation impact on the environment. For airports to be able to receive electric aviation they need to develop their infrastructure so they can accommodate electric aircrafts. The introduction of new infrastructure at airports will be challenging and will introduce new risks to an already complex environment. In preparation for this implementation of electric aircrafts more research is needed on what kind of new risks are added at airports. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate what new risks are introduced at airports that have infrastructure for electric aviation and what measures that can be taken to reduce these risks. To achieve the aim a prognosis of how an airport with infrastructure for electric aviation will look in 2035 was made. On this prognosis a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) was performed. This risk analysis showed that the primary risk was thermal runaway in batteries caused by a technical errors or inexperience with personal. To reduce the risk, the aviation industry needs to invest in securing competence in their personal by recruiting or education. Emergency personnel need to have an education in battery fires and be included in the planning of new infrastructure. The research also showed that it is vital that European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) include electric aviation in their regulations.
