Abstract
This report examines the different aspects that are important when selecting a heating and
cooling system for a hospital building in Sweden. The systems are evaluated by examining
them from an energy security and sustainability perspective to find what tradeoffs are made
between the two, using the frameworks provided by the report Den robusta sjukhusbyggnaden
and the Swedish building certification system Miljöbyggnad. The report used a mixed method
approach, using simulations in IDA-ICE of a Swedish emergency room to approximate factors
such as energy usage for different heating and cooling systems, as well as interviews with
experts and relevant professionals. The simulation showed that a geothermal heat pump had
the lowest energy use but had major effects on the electricity usage. This is one of the reasons
why district heating was the favored system, according to the interviews, along with its simplicity
on for the user. The conclusion was made that the energy security took the highest priority
between the two because the operational integrity of a hospital cannot be compromised.
However, sustainability still is considered significant factor when choosing a heating and cooling
system and several synergies can be found between the two concepts.
